Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of alternative therapy that aims to enhance the body's natural healing processes by gently manipulating the skull, spine, and sacrum.
It is a fundamental therapy which we incorporate in both our Holistic Orientated Therapy and in our Emotional Release Therapy.
Concept
CST is based on the idea that the body has a subtle, rhythmic pulse known as the craniosacral rhythm. This rhythm is believed to be distinct from the cardiovascular or respiratory rhythms and can be felt throughout the body. Practitioners of CST aim to detect and correct imbalances or restrictions in this rhythm to promote health and well-being.
Technique
- Gentle Touch: CST involves the practitioner using light touch, typically no more than the weight of a nickel, to assess the craniosacral rhythm.
- Palpation: The practitioner palpates different parts of the body, particularly the skull (cranium), the spine, and the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine).
- Adjustment: If any restrictions or imbalances are detected, the practitioner gently manipulates the craniosacral system to release these restrictions and restore balance.
Indications
CST is used to address a variety of conditions, including:
- Chronic pain
- Migraines and headaches
- Stress and tension-related disorders
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
- Central nervous system disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Learning disabilities
- Emotional difficulties
